I am an educator, world traveler, devoted daughter, sister, and aunt, and grateful beneficiary of African American culture and gifts from my ancestors. And a lucky recipient of the trifecta of society awards: racism, sexism, and now, ageism. These have shaped my life and informed my coaching practice. In 2016, I was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer of the small intestines. Cancer had spread to my mesentery, appendix, and lymph nodes. After surgery to remove the cancer, I have had six years of clear scans and am now working toward remission or no evidence of disease. I thought recovering from cancer meant that I should try to resume being the person I was before. However, this was impossible because I was no longer that person. But what remained was my resilience from my African American culture and upbringing and the love of my family and community.
In my over 25 years of working with children, I have noted the natural strength of all beings and believe strongly in human potential. I believe that we all are stronger than we know and that each of us has something unique and valuable to contribute to the world.
